Special Education Facilitator
What is Special Education?
Special education. Specially designed instruction, at no cost to the
parents, to meet the unique needs of a student with a disability, including
instruction conducted in the classroom, in the home, in hospitals and
institutions, and in other settings; and instruction in physical education.
The term includes speech/language pathology services and may include
other related services, travel training, and applied technology education, if
they meet the definition of special education.
“At no cost” means that all specially designed instruction is provided
without charge, but does not preclude incidental fees that are normally
charged to nondisabled students or their parents as part of the regular education.
Who do you make a referral?
Either a parent or an LEA may initiate a request for an initial evaluation to determine if a student is a student with a disability.
What is an evaluation?
A student who is referred for an evaluation will be assessed in all areas of a suspected disability. A student may be evaluated in the following categories: intellectual, academic, social, adaptive, emotional, vision, hearing, transition and in speech and language.
